The AIIF provides every firm of attorneys in South Africa with a primary level of professional indemnity (PI) insurance cover. However, we constantly receive a stream of letters from the major banks enquiring about the level of PI cover carried by attorneys appointed to their panels for the purpose of providing professional services to the banks - principally in conveyancing matters. The plethora of enquiries that we have to deal with has become an administrative nightmare for the AIIF.

The solution to this problem is indicated by the fact that the primary level of cover provided under the PI scheme is the same for all law firms countrywide, depending on the number of principals in each firm.

If you are a bank or other client of an attorneys firm, please establish from that firm the number of its principals at the time of the issue of instructions, and thereafter access the schedules to “The Policy” to confirm the primary level of cover for that particular firm.
